Released Political Prisoners are Being Thrown Back into Jail

Dear friend

A worrying trend is developing in Burma where former political prisoners who have been released are being arrested and jailed again. To draw attention to this and to try to stop it, we are highlighting the cases of these political prisoners, and asking you to help increase pressure for them to be freed. This week we are highlighting the case of Naw Ohn Hla - please click here to take action to help free her.

Naw Ohn Hla was arrested on 30th December 2014, and she is currently serving a prison sentence of six years and two months in the notorious Insein Prison in Rangoon. She is also facing further charges for peaceful protesting and if she is convicted, she could receive even more time in jail. She was arrested for protesting outside the Chinese Embassy in Rangoon.

The protesters were urging the government in Burma to carry out an investigation into the death of Khin Win. Khin Win was shot dead on 22 December 2014 when police opened fire on her and other protesters who were protesting against land being taken over for the Letpadaung copper mine project in Sagaing region.

The Letpadaung project has resulted in land confiscations, environmental degradation, and the implementation of a policy of arresting and harassing peaceful protesters.

Naw Ohn Hla is a prominent woman activist who has been arrested and jailed numerous times for her political activities. Your action previously helped to secure her freedom and she needs your help again.

Please email the Home Affairs Minister Lt General Ko Ko, to ensure the immediate release of Naw Ohn Hla and the remaining political prisoners in Burma.

You can also write a letter to Naw Ohn Hla to express your solidarity. Please write to the following address:

Naw Ohn Hla
C/O U Kyaw Htay, The governor of Insein Prison
Insein Prison
Yangon, Myanmar

An airmail letter from United Kingdom to Myanmar (Burma) will cost £2.25.

Thank you.
