Action Alert: Call for Action on Sunday 3 May World Press Freedom Day - #FreeUnity5

1 May 2014

Action Alert

Take part in Amnesty International's upcoming action calling for the release of the Unity journalists

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This Sunday, on 3 May it will be Press Freedom Day. On this occasion, Amnesty International will call on its members and partners to flood the Minister of Information's Facebook page with comments calling for the release of the Unity Five. We believe that he is in a position to influence their release.

Who are the Unity Five?
Lu Maw Naing, Yarzar Oo, Paing Thet Kyaw, Sithu Soe – reporters for the Unity newspaper – and Tint San its chief executive officer, have been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for "disclosing state secrets" after publishing an article about an alleged secret chemical weapons factory in Magwe Region, central Myanmar. Amnesty International considers them to be prisoners of conscience and calls for their unconditional and immediate release. Their detention demonstrates the continued risks to media workers and restrictions on freedom of expression in Myanmar.

What is available?
Visit our website and download a graphic of the Unity Five in .jpg which can be posted on the Ministry of Information's Facebook page. You can also find suggested Facebook posts and tweets in English and Burmese provided by Amnesty International to promote the action.

You will also be able to read in English and Burmese a blog which provides background to the case and the issue of media freedom in Myanmar via this link.

Amnesty International will also release a public statement on Sunday.

Please only share this email with your networks at this stage but NOT with the media yet to avoid that the Minister of Information locks his Facebook page before Sunday 3 May. We will communicate with media at a later stage.

In Solidarity,
The Burma Partnership Secretariat
