Dear friend

This Christmas, Burma?s President Thein Sein is expected to announce the release of more political prisoners, and he will claim that all political prisoners have now been freed. But peaceful protesters and human rights defenders continue to face persecution. Over 200 people are awaiting trial and facing jail.

Just last week, on 13th December, three human rights activists went on hunger strike. They have been imprisoned since June.

Khin Mi Mi Khaing, Myint Myint Aye and Thant Zin Htet were arrested for supporting farmers? protests against land confiscation. They have been on trial for over six months. They are being held at Paung De prison and have so far faced over 20 court hearings. They have gone on hunger strike to protest against their treatment by Burma's judicial system.

Khin Mi Mi Khaing and Myint Myint Aye are leaders of two independent women's networks in Burma, and Thant Zin Htet is a student activist.

At court hearings, they are being treated as convicts, and Thant Zin Htet is being forced to wear handcuffs and iron shackles, just for leading a peaceful protest.

Toe Lay, the younger brother of Myint Myint Aye, said that their family had heard that she was malnourished, but that prison authorities were denying them access to visit her.

There are hundreds of family members like Toe Lay in Burma who are missing a loved one this Christmas. Please give ?20, or whatever you feel you can afford, towards our work. We can?t campaign without your support - almost all our funding comes from individuals like you.

The release of political prisoners so far shows that international pressure does work. But the law used to jail them is still in place, and they can be sent back to jail at any time. They live in constant fear of that, and so do the family members of thousands of other former political prisoners.

With your help we have successfully helped free hundreds but the root causes of injustice, discrimination and unjust laws remain.

We are desperately short of funds and we need your support. That is why I am asking you to make a donation of ?20 or whatever you feel you can donate to Burma Campaign UK today.

Please give whatever you feel able. You can donate by <applewebdata://D3AC1BD3-1498-44A9-A1E7-1A16570342AD/www.burmacampaign.org.uk/donate> <applewebdata://F32C8E28-7126-40C5-BF69-C6B08A10BB10/www.burmacampaign.org.uk/donate> credit card, debit card or Paypal here<http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/index.php/burma/donate/donate-now>.

Thank you for your support this year.
