Dear friend

Take action to free Bauk Ja! No Political Prisoners must be left behind in
Burma?s jails!

Bauk Ja is a Kachin activist and a member of the National Democratic Force
(NDF) political party. She is also a campaigner for farmers' rights and land
rights in the country.

On 18th July 2013, Bauk Ja was taken from the NDF office by the local police
in Myitkyina without any explanation. She was told later that she had been
arrested for an incident that happened in 2009.

In 2009, she was helping sick villagers where there were no physicians
available with medicine, and a person she was trying to help died. At that
time she was planning to stand as an MP and to discredit her, the local
police forced the family member of the person who died to make a complaint
saying the death was her fault. The family member later withdrew the

Now the local police have reopened the old case, and this is certainly
politically motivated because of her activities for farmers? rights and land

She has been charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, causing death
by negligence, the Medical Council Act: Section 41, for possession of
medical equipment not registered with the Medical Council, and Section 33,
for illegal possession of medicine. Her lawyer said if she is found guilty,
she could be sentenced to 7 to 10 years imprisonment under section 304(a)
alone. Her trial continues at Hpakant court.

Please email President Thein Sein to demand the immediate and unconditional
release of Bauk Ja and the remaining political prisoners in Burma.

Thank you.
