Teknaf, Bangladesh: A Burmese refugee belonging to the unofficial Lada camp died of starvation yesterday. Due to incessant heavy rain over two weeks, refugees have been facing severe food shortage because they have been unable to go out to work to support their families.

New Delhi – The Burmese military junta has extended an invitation to Ibrahim Gambari, UN Special envoy to Burma , to visit the country in mid-August. The visit has to do with resuming talks with the regime and the opposition, a UN spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Chiang Mai – In one of the bigger scandals that have rocked Burma , a secret and special tribunal in the country's notorious Insein prison on Monday commenced the trial of business tycoon Maung Weik. He is charged with alleged abuse and trafficking in drugs.
